Use of Fire Blankets for Welding

Updated: May 16, 2022

Almost every industry has repair and engineering work ongoing at their site which involves welding. Welding causes molten metal splatter to fall which can potentially damage the site or equipment at site. To avoid welding splatter damage fire blankets are used. The welding blankets catch the molten metal sparks which settle on the blanket forming black molten mass which cools off gradually.

The fire blankets used for welding splatter protection must be fire resistant, high temperature resistant and have enough strength to hold the molten lava as it cools of.

Considering the force and temperature of the welding sparks along with the distance from the blanket the following options are recommended:

1. Vermiculite Coated Ceramic with SS wire of 3.2 mm thickness

This provides temperature resistance upto 1260 ° , is IS 11871 & ISO 6940 fire certified and has high strength. This fabric may cause skin irritation so must be handled with gloves.

2. Vermiculite Coated High Silica fabric of 1.4 mm thickness

This provides temperature resistance upto 1000-1600 ° C, is IS 11871, ISO 6940, ISO 6941 Fire certified, JIS A1323 & NES 807 Welding tests certified & FM certified. This fabric is skin friendly.

3. Graphite Coated Fiberglass Fabric of 1.4 mm thickness

Black in colour this fire blanket is used for medium duty welding applications for temperatures upto 750 ° C and is IS 11871 fire certified. This fabric is easy to handle.

4. Silicone Coated Fiberglass in 1.0 mm thickness

Both Side Silicone Coated Fiberglass Fire Blanket available in red or grey colour is suitable for medium duty welding application for temperatures upto 550-750 ° C and is IS 11871 certified. They are very good to handle, have flexibility, and are long lasting. They also are water proof and so useful for outdoor welding applications especially in rainy conditions.

5. Fiberglass Fire Blanket of 0.8 mm thickness

This is the most basic fire blanket for light duty welding splatter protection upto 550 ° C and is IS 11871 fire certified. Light weight and easy to use.

Welding blankets can be made to size as per requirements.

All fire blankets are stitched with high temperature thread along the edges and have metal eyelets provided at regular intervals along the edge of the blanket allowing the user to hang the fire blanket.
